Catch the Good Vibrations of this Migration Sensation that's Sweeping the Nation!|
Hey there ladygents, I'm packing this baby up for now and taking it to tumblr! Where hopefully I will not neglect to update for months and months and will instead gleefully spam anyone who's watching with comics and sketches and thought-provoking links and pictures of baby animals, as is the custom of that land. So check me out here: http://laurellynnleake.tumblr.com/
I'll keep checking in here ... I'm definitely gonna miss the comments system here in livejournal though, not to mention all the great people who post here ... I've yet to see any new blogging service that has such an effective message of communication. So if you've got a tumblr of your own, please post it in the comments and we can tumble all the live-long day together!

Hey, another post! What'd I tell you - I told you that I'm awesome, that's what, and it is true.:D
I’ve been spending a lot of time creating head space for a host of characters. Some of these guys have been around for years but are only starting to make real sense to me now as I build the sort of world they live in. And today I feel like looking back over some of the cars linking up my looong train of thought. So it’s time for some character design!
( Get ready to scrooooolllllCollapse )
How do you develop your characters? Yeeeeeaaaaahh!!!!!!

Hey, you remember that thing I said about posting more often? Oh hoo hoo hoo hoo, that was a very funny joke that I made!
I've been keeping busy between my job and all the comics activities - tabling at Boston Comicon, making jam comics at Million Year Picnic on Free Comic Book Day, Lynda Barry and Alison Bechdel, Memorial Day barbecues! - that Sprangtime has brought! But since it takes me so damn long to actually post, I now have too many to recount. But let me tell you, they were a-ma-zing! Oh yeah!! You wish you was there!
( And without further ado, LOTS OF ART!!Collapse )

AN IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT ABOUT ME|
It has recently come to my attention that OH MY GOD PEOPLE ARE POSTING ABOUT ME ON THE INTERNET.
BECAUSE I AM AMAZING.
Two people, to be precise!
omg omg omg omg
Jim of podcast Tales From The Parents' Basement talks on an All Boston Episode! They requested a big pile of comics from the Boston Comics Roundtable and promptly read and reviewed them all. Enjoy his shout-out to the all-amazing ME and my Very Helpful Guide To Gaga (a little after the half-way mark....he liked it! ;_;) and discover some new Bostonian talents to add to your bookshelf, because you really should, because they are a classy bunch of broads and dudes.
Alexa Dickman of Ladies Making Comics wrote up this report on fabled nerd newssite Bleeding Cool on this years MoCCA festival in New York....and she just happened to end it with a Honorable Mention of my very own VERY HELPFUL GUIDE TO GAGA!
EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE OMG OMG OMG OMG AAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
But yanno, whatever, no big deal. I barely even noticed. B-)
Should you, however, desire to lavish me in praise and wonderments, I will allow it. And if you also desire to get your paws on your own copy of A Very Helpful Guide to Gaga, please just gaze into this font of light and witness the beauty of the new-and-improved THIRD EDITION:
It's the color of Gaga's most favorite and most buttery wigs, and it can be yours for two shiny virtual dollahs. Just comment, message, or email me at laurelleake at the gmail place.
For those of you who might be stopping by from my deviantart on the hunt for Lady Gaga goodness, please follow the tags or simply go this-a-way for PART ONE and PART TWO. Or you could just roam around and forage for amusement in my sketches, illustrations, and comics. :3 You really should. Why doncha. Bring a snack.

I know what I know would not fill a thimble.|
Exhausted, wrung like a sponge, and worn through. I can't wait for the Paint & Pixel Festival next Saturday - are you planning a trip there too? I'm mooching a car ride off of the endlessly generous Cherry Ogata of the Boston Comics Roundtable with fellow members Kyle Anderson, Ron LeBrasseur, and E.J. Barnes too. Maybe we'll see you there.

What have you been dreaming lately?

Wu-oh oh, Wu-oh oh! Be my animal. |
Where I have been lately is not on livejournal! Where I have been is at a real-live actual factual JOB, ooooooh! Very special. But don't think I've stopped drawing even for a second because you don't even know I am drawing right now even while I am typing I am moving the pencil with my telekinesis because I am very talented in ways you don't even know and that is why I am the best artist in the world.
Or that is to say that I have been working on a number of things in an on and off fashion but never getting motivated enough to post anything. I now have an alarming pile of assorted unfinished projects, doodles, photographs, etc jumbled together without rhyme or reason. In my infinite wisdom I have thus decided to subject any readers with MORE posts more often! You can sample the first tastefully arranged selection of that bounty under the cut.
( What I have in fact been up to.Collapse )
What a happy end - finally! - to a miserable endless season of grey skies and ice-choked streets and trapped rage-fits. May your spring come quickly.

Bright Colors, Dancing, and Soft Fabrics!|
It’s been a long, hard winter for me, so I’ve been turning inward and burrowing into my warm room-cave to hibernate with my computer and sketchbook. With all the bleak flatness of winter outside I’ve been obsessing even more over fashion instead – fabrics, silhouettes, patterns, textures, hairstyles, accessories, everything (I feel like Vince Noir’s ideal girlfriend hee hee :D). I’m not going to pretend that I actually know anything about fashion now but I know when I like something and I’m trying to train myself to pick up a pen when I do. Clothing says so much about a person – it’s a crucial aspect of our identity as a species – and it’s a language we all share and that you can use to tell your readers about your characters. AND IT’S COMPLETELY AWESOME.
And that’s why I’ve decided to dump half my sketchbook over your head under the cut.
Right there Jaime Hernandez portrays Maggie at six separate points of her life simultaneously. WHAT
( You think Fashion’s your friend, my friend, but Fashion is DANGERCollapse )
( And a basketful of fashion links for your bowery to bootCollapse )
Who, when, and where are your fashion inspirations?

Why, hello there, any visitors from Arisia, New England's largest and most diverse science fiction and fantasy convention! I had no idea your convention existed until last week and I still had an absolute blast getting to know you and your cosplaying, socially progressive, kink-friendly, and determinedly self-publishing ways.
If you by some chance came across my Guide to Gaga mini zine, you'd probably enjoy my full Very Helpful Guide to Gaga and her perplexing Videography! Yes, you would! Follow the links for PART ONE and PART TWO or click the Lady Gaga tag for more. The genuine 100% real paper fiber mincomic will also soon be available again too! Only this time, with SLIGHTLY FANCIER THINGS IN IT. You'll dig it. Oh how you will dig it.
Anyway, as I have been neglecting this sketchblog for the past month due to holiday traveling madness and other madness-related activities, I will rectify this immediately with convention scans from Arisia and the New England Webcomics Weekend both!
( portraits after portraits under the cut with a BOOONUS COLOR PORTRAIT TOO OOOCollapse )

Hey there, gorgeous.|
Welcome to anyone who might by any slim chance have found their way here to my sketchblog after reading my Very Helpful Guide to Gaga at the New England Webcomics Weekend last week, which was…
I met so many incredible artists I admire, like Jess Fink, Spike, Erika Moen, Lucy Knisley…and so on and so on..! All the blazing stars of the webcomics galaxy were there, at least in my opinion, which is the one that matters. Each and every person I talked to graciously tolerated my burbling and gave me quite a few valuable insights on pursuing a career in comics. This is because they are, as I may have mentioned, GLORIOUS in both art and deed!
This may come as a surprise to you, but I managed (with the help of both laughing_anima and an ingenious UPS employee) to complete a honest-to-god zine out of my gaga comics in time for the festival with not a moment to spare. I was stapling their spines on the ride over to East Hampton in a delirium of excitement. And people actually liked them...!
I’ve been hopped up on a comics high all week, and somehow forgot to ever post anything ever. Please accept my humble offerings of an extra Very Helpful Diagram of The Anatomy Of Gaga under the cut, as well as an impossibly sexy advertisement.
( OH MAN things are getting all scientific up in hereCollapse )
If you're a new visitor from NEWW, I'd love to read your comments!
